Raining Men (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I enjoyed it, but there are a few caveats.First, I'm glad I read this without having read the previous book. I don't think I would have been able to stand the main character if I knew the sordid details of his betrayal. And really, this book works fine as a standalone.I loved Bobby's journey, and I liked that the "obvious" choice wasn't the end romance. Overall well written, it was definitely an emotional journey.I'm deducting a star for a few reasons. For one, name dropping other gay romance authors. I'm assuming the author is friends with them or admires them or something, but it's just tacky all around and simply doesn't work. Too many dream sequences. I tolerate them at the best of times, but in general I just find them lazy storytelling. Besides which, I can't stand reading long paragraphs in italics. (Oh, and the scene with the father? What was that even?)Then, while I liked the final pairing, I also thought that it happened a bit too fast. Like the author was getting bored or couldn't think of any proper scenes between the two of them. After how much detail was given to other relationships, it was kind of off putting. And the epilogue also didn't work for me: it was too "lol fake out!" and made me roll my eyes when I caught on to what was up.Still worth the read, despite the flaws. I think it's a bit more serious than the usual gay romance fare though. I suspect this is one i will be returning to to finish, it has a good premise and the character is learning to redeem himself, i'm at a slow point in the book and there are enough of those in the story that i am taking a step back. Bobby is trying to learn that you dont have to jump right into bed with someone, espeically as you get older and are trying to find that special someone-taking time might just be the hardest lesson for a sex addict...
