Good I loved this! Every time I grew comfortable with where I thought the plot was heading, I was thrown off course but that was OK. I wanted to be thrown. I was thrilled, eyes eagerly scanning each new page for what happens next, and that's a rarity.The world building is something that's complicated, and I can see getting even more complicated as time goes on. But the world of biting trees, shadow people and magic was one I've never seen, and I loved it in its complexity.Then there's the characters. Lark was a real favorite. I adored that she honestly believed she was so useless that nothing she had done ensured her own survival. She was real, with faults. She gets duped, but is strong enough to never fall into despair. She can think, make her own decisions, and do the right thing. I loved her! There's two male characters, but this never reads like a love triangle.I bought the next book at the same time. Yay! But I have to sleep and then work :/ Maybe look for my review tomorrow there? I follow several authors on twitter whose work I love and who are entertaining. One of those authors suggested SKYLARK to her followers because the Kindle edition was 99 cents on Amazon and here we are. I adore fantasy novels, and the mechanisms and machines of this book caught my fancy. The idea of magic as a power source is not new in fantasy, but the idea of magic as a power source to *machines* is not often explored, especially in YA literature. This book is in first person, which is not my favorite format, but it is definitely worth it. Readers will cheer for Lark and will wait anxiously for her to figure out her abilities. I encourage anyone who likes Susan Dennard's SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY series to read this one.Magic, a bit of redemption, and a dash of kissing. This book is worth so much more than the 99 cents!
