Playing The Odds (1992) - Plot & Excerpts

Ondan sonrada adam kızı her fırsatta yakalamaktadır.

Every year I set myself a reading challenge, to try a genre that I have not been overly exposed to and this year I thought I would give the world of romance a go. So I brought a stack, probably 20 books from a op shop and thought it is time to give them a crack. The first book I read 'the good time guy' by Rosemary Badger was not particularly good. In the pile was a Nora Roberts. I have read a couple of Roberts books before but not in this format. So you have Serena McGregor who wants to make it on her own, so she works on a cruise ship and is coming up to the end of her contract. In steps the Justin Blade the hero. Well the sparks fly from the outset and off we go. Now with Roberts she is very clever in bringing the elements of the story together, giving you a sense of the direction of where it is going and kindly throws in a small curve ball along the way to keep the tension. Serena McGregor is a woman who does not come across as needing rescuing and certainly can handle herself but she happy to admit that along the way having a Justin Blade to share the journey is not such a bad thing. The story was engaging the two main characters carried enough baggage to make them interesting and it was not that bad.

What do You think about Playing The Odds (1992)?

"People in love belong together." - Serena MacGregorAfter having read my fair share of NR's trilogies and series so far, I figured it was about time I returned to one of her most famous ones. I had read Serena's story - along with Caine's - when I was still in high school, so I thought I would just give it a quick reading and move on to the next ones. How wrong I was...There's only one thing Serena MacGregor, with all her diplomas and intelligence, wants. And that is to do business in the world

Serena MacGregor has spent the last year as a dealer on a cruise ship, dealing blackjack night after night to thousands of people. When Justin Blade sits down at her table, it only takes one glance to realize her life is about to change.A professional gambler, and casino owner, Justin with his Indian heritage knows how to get what he wants and what he wants is Serena. What he doesn't realize at first is that he's been set up by the master, Daniel MacGregor. The MacGregor has decided that Justin is perfect for his little girl, and he sets out scheming to get them together, as Anna is ready for grandchildren. The first of the MacGregor children to be set up by their father, Serena doesn't easily fall into line, but realizing that Justin is exactly what she wants, she'll forgive her father for meddling...eventually.

(3.5 stars) This is a novella and so Roberts doesn't have as much time as she does in her novels to fully develop a plot or explore the characters. Also, the romance feels a little rushed, since such limitations mean the hero and heroine have to become romantically involved pretty early in the story - or at least, that's what happens in Playing the Odds. The attractions is basically immediate and instantaneous and that there would be such depth of feeling and connection between two people who really don't know each other didn't really ring true for me. The characters of Serena and Justin were interesting, however, and I did like their relationship and romance, but I just wish they would have gotten their own full-length novel.
