Only In Your Dreams (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

i'm so entertained right now, review soonmarch 21 postthis is also posted in my blog THE DAILY FATRICKThe ninth book in the Gossip Girl series creatively written by the ever-catty Cecily von Ziegescar, Only In Your Dreams, is the eight book I’ve read in the year 2013.Have you ever tried reading a book where in the first fifty pages were just plain boring and you almost gave up reading the whole thing and then you realized it’s the last page? Well, this book is certainly entertaining. In the beginning, there were a lot of introductions to the new situations our beloved GG characters are in which will be told without any spoilers later. So, intro. I was literally thinking of giving the book one-star. Now, I don’t like giving books a star out of five because I believe why would a publishing company publish a book that sucks and is 200+ pages worth of the author’s hardwork?Yes, I read chic-lit. And I’m secretly reading them away from the sight of my friends because they’ll judge me. Gossip Girl is simply irresistable! My inner chic (not my ‘inner goddess’ from the horny book) is just totally out on this book. I’m blushing right now, I can’t believe I am going to publish this for the whole world. But I have to, I have to write 100 book reviews this year. (I love setting goals!)Well, let’s go to the story, shall we?If you don’t read these kinds of novels, then you should just probably go but take a chance maybe there is something worth being curious for.The blonde and beautiful protagonist, Serena van der Woodsen has landed a big role on a big Hollywood teen movie by the bossy director Ken Mogul. Remember on the previous book—the Blair versus Serena audition? Serena is definitely gorgeous. And Serena has a very hot costar Thaddeus, whose real name is Tim but that’s not the point. I’m hearing unethical sex on the set perhaps? No. I’m not.Blair, queen B, is in London. Oh wait. Blair is stuck in London with her English minor Royal boyfriend Lord Marcus who has a cousin or whatever she is to him that ruined her stay in London. She then strides off to buy a wedding gown for herself and booked an expensive ticket back to New York, disappointed. And then, she lands a summer job. That’s one way to keep busy, B.Nate is basically the most stupidest and least interesting character in the book and the series but he is still a great addition to be honest, if you know what I mean. Nate, due to his Viagra-stealing-from-his-Coach-before-graduation episode in the previous book, has to work hard to earn his diploma by fixing his Coach’s house and ran errands for him in the Hamptons but then she meets a weird yet completely irrelevant girl who have sex with Chuck in the bathroom at the end of the book. And then, he is still incomplete without his poor Blair. I think Nate is just really trying to find comfort in his life. He’s lost. He needs something—a purpose to go on with this life and not to float around the book with no-one-really-cares-about story lines von Ziegescar is assigning to him.Dan, my favorite fictional character of all time, is stacking bookshelves and giving recommendations to nerdy customers. And then, she meets an interesting girl whose name is Bree. (All I could think about Bree was the fact that she is actually my first character in my novel I never published. She’s kind of like a similar Blair to me but… that’s not a point). Dan Humphrey, then, goes to a naked yoga class with her and jog without lungs at the park because he’s kind of bored with Vanessa. Vanessa’s been kicked out from her house by her sister Ruby to make room to Ruby’s new Czech-kind-of boyfriend. Vanessa moves in with Dan and lands a job in Ken Mogul’s film and then things went interesting and down.Jenny is absent but her name is floating around. Chuck Bass makes appearances here and there. I keep asking myself why wasn’t he a central character. I checked the book publishing date and it was published in 2006, and Gossip Girl TV series with Chuck Bass as main character first aired in 2007 so…God, this review is too long. The book wasn’t so bad. There was a lot of quotable quotes from the ever bitch Gossip Girl. Her persona on the book is just a reminding presence on how saucy and delicious New York—Manhattan life is.I love the chapters as well. I love everything about it. I’m so entertained. And there’s no doubt I’ll be buying its sequels. I’m thinking of reading another von Ziegescar this year—Cum Laude? I don’t think I will like her spin-off series It Girl, who centers on Jenny’s adventures, and there’s no Blair Waldorf. Why did I love this book? That’s a secret I’ll never tell.XOXO

How I Came To Read This Book: I just kept on reading the GG series…I think this is one of the last, if not the last one I read / own, other than the prequel. The Plot: Graduation is over, but we’ve still got a summer with our stars before they go their separate ways and the series runs it course (unlike the TV show, which has actually flourished outside of that pesky high school environment). Blair is off in London with her British Lord of a boyfriend with wedding bells ringing in her head. Serena is set to star in a remake of Breakfast at Tiffanys. And Nate is back in the Hamptons where he belongs – plus Vanessa (shaved head edition) and Dan are loving it up in NYC. The Good & The Bad: By this point in the series, I think everyone was pretty aggravated at the annoyingly charmed lives these characters are living. I remember thinking Blair’s storyline in particularly was ridiculous as she was (true to form) completely obsessed and worked up about her latest beau. Honestly all of these characters were doing exactly what they always do in the exactly insane overdramatic way they always do – Blair is OCD, Nate is stonerrific, Serena is charmingly inept at everything in life ever, and Vanessa and Dan are near-suicidal. I mean…if you’re going to read the whole series, you may as well read it through, but I’m not going to sit here and recommend you do it. The Bottom Line: Another chapter in a nearly-stale series by this point.Anything Memorable: 50-Book Challenge?: N/A

What do You think about Only In Your Dreams (2006)?

I'm importing a lot of these reviews from my blog, so these are from the point at which I read these books. This was the first Gossip Girl book I read, and I went on to read the first book within a week of reading this one, so I must have liked it more than it sounds here:This book wasn't very good, but I still read it in pretty much one sitting. The most surprising thing about it wasn't the sex (a lot of sex was alluded to, but no one actually had any) but how much the characters smoked. They all smoked literally the entire book, except for one character who did not smoke cigarettes but was smoking a joint in literally every scene. I was surprised that in the complaints I've heard about this kind of book they've never mentioned that. Also, all the adults in the book took the kids deadly seriously, but that's neither here nor there. Sort of like with Teen Vogue, I wasn't particularly sure why real teens would be interested in this -- even I found the label-dropping tedious after like five pages, and I don't care how savvy the girls in the Midwest supposedly are these days, between the clothes, the clubs, and the restaurants, there's no way they are picking up on this.

A jinak? Zlatá mládež, která svým množstvím voleb neví, co vlastně chce. Nabízí se tedy otázky: vědí vůbec, co od života chtějí? Znají sami sebe?

I felt like very little happened in this book. I also found some continuity errors and typos. One of the things that annoys me about Serena, Nate, and Blair is that they sometimes seem so dissociative and vapid in their thinking...like thinking is just soooo hard and they can't quite wrap their brains around something obvious. They feel annoyed, confused, or unsettled, but because they don't like the unpleasant feeling, their brains circumvent thoughts that would lead to that feeling.I just picture them as wide-eyed babies, staring agape at some mysterious sight above their head, puzzling over what it could be and maybe drooling a little. Which would be fine if they really were babies, but I think they're 17?
