Mr. Terupt Falls Again (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Mr. Terupt gets to "loop" with his class as he moves from teaching fifth to sixth grade. The kids are relieved and grateful to be able to spend another year with this man they've grown so close to. This book grows up a bit from the last one as it tackles some "bigger-kid" issues, like female development, drug and alcohol use, peer pressure, abandoned children, and struggles with parents. I still love Mr. Terupt's character as the super-observant, life-changing teacher who just seems to know the best way to influence his students- individually and as a class. But you may want to save this book for the 13+ crowd. The first book about Mr. Terupt was amazing, but this sequel was not as good. Mr. Terupt follows his students to 6th grade, where he is again their teacher. The same students continue to grow up and there are some 6th grade issues that may not be appropriate for 4th and 5th graders, such as Alexia smoking and being tempted with drugs and some of the girls getting their periods. Be forewarned about this book before reading it aloud to a class. In a way, this book reminded me of Judy Blume's Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret.
