La Selección (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

So this book is for the people who read the hunger games and thought "hey, this sh*t is too dark, with too much actual plot. I want more of the fluffy interview process from the beginning, and way more love triangle tension!" I'm not saying it wasn't moderately entertaining, but there wasn't a lot of substance. I suppose sometimes it's nice to read something fluffy and light that doesn't require a lot of thinking, though. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!The Selection is essentially a competition to win the heart of Illéa's prince and to become the next beloved queen. The protagonist, America Singer is a stubborn red-head that is determined NOT to get entered into The Selection. Why is that? It's because she's got a dashing man waiting for her at home. Aspen Ledger, a hardworking seven, and America's secret boyfriend convinces her to enter after an argument. After that, it's a love triangle filled with drama, danger and competition. I first found this book at my school library. I was having a hard time finding a good book to read and when I saw The Selection I thought I might just give it a try. After reading through a couple chapters, I was hooked. The book is amazing, the plot is amazing, the characters are amazing and *BONUS* the cover is stunning. The author, Kiera Cass did a great job of keeping everything hooking, error free and easy to follow. After reading The Selection, I was hungry for the next books in the series. Then, I recommended the series to my friends (they loved it) and I have reread the whole series along with the novellas. (SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT NOVELLA AND NOVLEL TO COME OUT) I'd say the only downside this novel is that it's pretty much a lovey-dovey version of The Hunger Games. You could literally match up a character to one from The Hunger Games. Other than that, this book is unbelievably great!

What do You think about La Selección (2012)?

I overall did enjoy the book but giving it 4 stars because the cliffhanger was not something I liked and I found the ending scenes to be rushed like we as readers know from the get go that this is gonna be a series so why did the author wait so long to cut to 6 girls. Also when the Prince didn't believe America at first about Celeste it seemed out of character in way...this was corrected later because we find that Celeste is important due to her family connections but still it bothered me. This book would be awesome if they focused more on the political problems....because Cass does paint an interesting world and I want to see more then just the castle.Favourite Scene: When America says she is not picking either guy but in fact is picking herself.

I keep forgetting that these books are "young adult" books. So I did set a much higher standard and expected a bit more from it. However, the plot and the writing veered more towards the "young" part of YA. So it might not have swooned me that much, and I believe that younger (or more naive?) readers can and will enjoy the story more than me. Anyway, I still gave it an extra star (I plan to just give it one) because of the very amusing fictional history of how the dystopian society in this book came about.
