Kitty Goes To War (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This was more entertaining than the last Kitty book. Unlike the last installment that was a senseless gore-fest, this book had very little action, with most of the plot advancing through conversations. It was nice to see Ben and Kitty interact and for Cormac to finely return. Have to say I'm not to thrilled with his new character direction and still think it hurt the series to remove him from so many books.Despite the war title, Kitty doesn't actually go to war. The plot is split between Kitty attempting to help some Green Berets adjust to being werewolves and trying to figure out what magical shenanigans the owner of a chain of convenience stores is up to. Neither story is fully exploited and their resolutions are rushed. More troubling, all of the new characters are two dimensional resulting in a superficial tale that didn't fully engage me. The books are now emotionally flat. Sadly, it seems the Kitty series has devolved into just an average read for the genre. I listened to the audio book of the Kitty Norville series. Marguerite Gavin does a fantastic job of performing the characters in the book. Through Ms. Gavin's performance reading the books has made the series one that I really enjoy. The snarky prose is funny and moves quickly. She has the "radio voice" of Kitty down perfect. This story is Carrie Vaughn's tribute to the U.S. armed forces where some special forces soldiers are werewolves adjusting to being home from combat and also being werewolves. This part of story is thin in places. The story is still fun and fairly fasted paced. There is also a wizard who seems to control the weather that plays as a backdrop to the whole story which Cormac plays a key role.Overall, there is enough drama is the story to keep it interesting but doesn't get to deep or depressing.

What do You think about Kitty Goes To War (2010)?

Oh, lucky me. I discovered yet another Kitty novel, probably sent me by the same person who sent the first one I read (Kitty's House of Horrors) and this one is even better. Yeah, even though I don't read books about werewolves or vampires or any of that stuff. Yeah.Kitty is charming, the concern of the pack for one another is wonderful, and this particular novel, which hits hard on post traumatic stress disorder (now, imagine being a soldier and suddenly a werewolf?) is an easy read.I don't read books with lots of violence, either. But somehow there are hearts torn out and slashed throats and deaths and...but it's all good. Well, maybe not, but well plotted and quick reading and I am looking for more, so, what can I say?

The story line gets more involved and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Kitty is now firmly entrenched as the pack leader but she's a reluctant leader which makes me like her even more. She cares about lycanthropes who are outside her pack and works to help them adjust to this new "lifestyle". This series is well done and is overcoming my initial dislike of this genre. It's not winning me over to reading all authors, but I will definitely read all of Carrie Vaughn's!
