Judy Moody And The Bad Luck Charm (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Category: Fiction (Realistic Fiction/Humor)Source: 2013 Children’s Choice AwardsI can see why this book was put on the 2013 Children's Choice Awards list. It is a great read that kids will thoroughly enjoy. This book is the 11th book of the Judy Moody series, so there are many more books that children can read to keep them interested if they love Judy Moody. Judy Moody is in third grade herself, so this is a great book for grades 3-5. This book is based on Judy's lucky penny that her grandmother gives her. Her penny gives her good luck, but how far will luck take her? This book is based on Judy's lucky penny that her grandmother gives her. Once Judy gets her penny, she can't stop winning. She wins at bowling, spelling, and wins the prize claw 3 times. She is hoping that her penny will help her win the spelling bee so that she can take a trip to Washington DC, but how far will the penny's luck take her? The theme of this book consists of friendship and humor. It is a great read for all ages and keeps you laughing. The characters in this book are Judy, her little brother, Stink, Grandma Lou, Judy's third grade teacher, Mr. Todd, Jessica, Rocky, and Frank. All of the character interactions are great in this book and the characters really bring the book to life. This book is told by Judy, but is more action and dialogue directed. All of Megan McDonald's books are very appealing to children, and even adults. She uses humor in order to keep the children engaged. Judy Moody may be used as a great theme in the classroom, but overall, these books are just a fun read for kids and they can connect with Judy on a personal level since she is in third grade herself. Judy is such a fun, appealing character and I enjoy seeing what she will do or say next. Of all the Judy Moody books this one was my least favorite. Toward the end of the book I just got sick of reading the rudeness between Judy and Jessica Finch. The fact that the parents were present and said nothing about their negative nastiness made it that much worse. Other than that section of the book it was a normal fun book about the quirky yet flawed Judy Moody and her family. However if this was the first Judy Moody book I picked up it would have been the last.
