How It Rolls (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Falcon Black is one of those people who aren't one who you should judge by the cover as he is tattooed and has a mohawk. By day however Falcon is an accountant and number crunching square. He may be in his 20's but instead of partying it up and sleeping around, he would rather head to bed early, work and spend time with his family. This story starts when Falcon's family hires Reed Wolfe - a girl who intrigues Falcon but she's hiding a big secret and Falcon can't help but discover and then in turn make her life better. That is the Love part of the series. The Skate part is that Falcon's sister-in-law Nellie is part of a roller derby team and they have the try-outs and Reed makes the team. This book reminded me of the Pysch episode when Juliet joins a roller derby team in order to solve a crime crossed with the film Whip It. If you are wanting a book with Roller Derby and one that teaches us not to judge people by what they look like. This is also a great series to read if you have enjoyed The Derby Girl by Tamara Morgan. This book is the second book of it's series. The first installment was about Nellie and Owen, this installment continues their story but focuses on Owen's younger brother Falcon. It has been 4 years since the end of the first book and Falcon is now 20. He works for the various family business interests and attends school at Tulane. Falcon is everyone's go to guy, very reliable, will do anything for his family. While working in his sister-in-law's book store, he meets her new employee Reed and there is an instant attraction. I liked the character of Reed for the most part. There were some instances in which I didn't feel what she was doing was very realistic in regard to her situation. I won't go into any details because I don't want to spoil any of the story. Once again the book was well written and a good story. I did feel as though the ending was rushed though. I tapped to go to the next page and there was nothing, I flipped back again to make sure I didn't miss something but no it was truly the ending. I have not read the third book in this series and I am hoping there will be a little more closure for Falcon and Reed's story along with the story of Maddox. We will have to wait and see.
