How Evan Broke His Head And Other Secrets (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Evan is a difficult character to like entirely. Although I liked this book, it was not always easy to like the main character Evan. While it was easy to have empathy with Evan over his epilepsy and how it has changed his life's course, it was sometimes difficult to understand why Evan did some of the things he did. However, by the last twenty pages things are explained and the entire book made more sense. Therefore, by the end, I enjoyed the book and decided I liked Evan and seeing his maturing take place. The book does illustrate well how difficult life can be as one deals with family dynamics, friends, career, and health issues. Here is another charming gem of a book from Garth Stein, author of "The Art of Racing In The Rain." Evan Wallace, a thirty-one year old man, is juggling multiple problems -- his epilepsy, his parents, his brother, his rock band, a new girlfriend, and most of all, being a father to his fourteen year old son whom he has met for the first time. In the process of dealing with an extremely full plate, Evan discovers who he is and why he is the way he is. This is a coming-of-age story about a man who, for multiple reasons, was not able to come of age a lot sooner. I very much enjoyed this humorous, touching, and sometimes poignant book.
