Can I just say that I LOVE Mary Calmes?! I always love her books, and this was no exception. I have trouble with some short stories because you don't get to see the relationship develop, or you don't feel the chemistry between the two MCs because the story is too short, so the characters experience insta-love. Not so in this book... I felt conflicted along with Brian, I felt his pain over being around Varro and seeing him with all the women, and knowing that he will never have him. I think it was awful of Varro's family to ask him to put his feelings and pain aside to be part of Varro's racing team so that Varro was ok. If they truly considered him their son, I don't think they would put Varro's well-being above Brian's. I am such a freakin' huge fan of Mary Calmes. I am pretty sure I have read almost every story she has published. This one was pretty typical MC. It's a short story so there is only so much plot 86 pages can contain right? Overall, I did love it and was totally entertained until the very last word. Is it my favorite MC story? No. Is it my favorite MC short story? No.When I read her stuff I always take a leap of faith. To me that means I can't sit there and analyze every single aspect of how realistic a plot is - because if you did that with her stories you would hate them. They are totally unrealistic. Guys just don't become gay suddenly do they? Maybe they do? Hell, how would I know. I am a 45 year old straight woman, not a gay man, so who am I to say what is realistic. Her books tend to be about the heart - and love. Because I am a total hopeless romantic it doesn't take much for me to say - awwww - so romantic! I love it when characters beat the odds and find a happy ending. It pushes all my buttons. I did enjoy Brian's character a lot more than Varro's. Varro seemed like a jerk to me but what can I say - the heart wants what it wants and you shouldn't give it away to a guy who is straight (right Jory?) This one also was about motorcycle racing. Seriously, I wonder if many of readers of this story have ever even heard of the Isle of Man TT. I just watched it this week on Velocity. It's an automatic setting to tape every year on our DVR. Traveling to see the Isle of Man TT has been on my bucket list for over a decade. Needless to say all the racing jargon (and there is quite a lot) was not lost on me in this story. Overall a quick, fun and entertaining read.
