Hearse And Buggy (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I love to read about the Amish and have read many books featuring members of this community. This was my first Laura Bradford book. I enjoyed Hearse and Buggy but had one problem with it. I had no problem with the storyline, the characters or the ending. My problem was the transition between scenes. IOW there was none. An event would occur and then the next thing I knew I was in another location and the "finish" to the scene was simply mentioned within the next part of the book. It jolted me out of the story. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILERFor example, when Jakob's sister comes to meet him, Jakob dismisses Claire. I would have liked to see her reaction and thoughts as she left. This happened a number of times throughout the book and prevented me from fully getting involved in the story. Not enough to stop me from reading the second book though. I did enjoy the book, except for this one thing. When a cozy mystery has an endorsement from gritty Harlen Coben on the cover, a mystery-of-all-kinds reader like me will take note and buy that dadgum book. And immediately read it. I liked the characters and the small town of Heavenly, Pennsylvania. I liked how Claire, the main character, came to be in the small town that is a blend of Amish and the English as non-Amish are known. I especially enjoyed how Claire is drawn into the investigation. It was fairly seamless and didn't feel at all forced just to move the story along. And the ending....did not see that coming. Exceptionally enjoyable and can't wait to read the next in the series, ASSAULTED PRETZEL and SHUNNED AND DANGEROUS (out in 2014).
