He + She (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I have some mixed feelings about this book, but overall I really did enjoy it. I realized almost right away that He + She was short for Hew and Shea which was pretty clever. I had thought so many things about Shea's character only to be completely wrong towards the end of the book. I love the beginning of this book with it taking place in San Fransisco and with the fortune cookie factory and all that. The ending took me completely off guard and I never could have predicted it. It kind of reminds me of Ugly Love by Colleeen Hoover. It also in some ways kind of reminded me of Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. *SPOILERS BELOW*I was really frustrated by the ending because it is left open to interpretation and even though I usually like that, it was frustrating not knowing what Shea's real name is. That last line when it says "All I heard was hope" can mean so many different things. Does that mean her name is hope? I don't know but that's what I was thinking. Also, I know that it makes Shea unique but I thought it was slightly annoying that she was running around everywhere in her weekly underwear. I just found it odd I guess. But the scene by the cliff when we discover Luke is a figment of her imagination was so shocking and actually made me like this book a lot more. I would have given it 3 stars if it wasn't for that amazing twist at the end because that is what sets this book apart from all the other love stories. And the fact that Hew's sister Beth was the driver who hit Bren and Shea was so shocking too because Hew was the one who saved her. So crazy. That's why the scene with the car accident in the water reminded me a lot of Ugly Love. Every once in awhile you read a book that refuses to leave you. I finished this book a week ago and I still find myself thinking about Hew and Shea. Their chemistry, their passion, their total broken lives...I'm possessed! Michelle Warren weaves a story of tremendous loss, and redemption from the point of view of 2 tragic souls. If you want to know more, you're going to have to read it. You won't be disappointed, I promise. It's a beautifully written story from a tremendously gifted writer.
