Harken (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Spoiler free.As a fan of Kaleb Nation as both a YouTuber and an author, I purchased this book nearly the moment it came out in print. I only just had the pleasure of reading it, though. I sped through the book in a matter of a few days, and I am impressed with what I see, though I think he can do even better with the sequel.I would say that this book deserves a 3.5 rating. The first half of the book is riddled with grammatical errors, to the point where it nearly made my inner-grammar nazi want to put the book down. The second half of the book tightened up the writing enough to let me become immersed in the story, more than it would have if the latter half of the book had continued on with the example of the first. I try to ignore such errors, as no one is perfect, but the amount of errors in this book was nearly overwhelming, at times.Ignoring all grammatical problems, the story of 'Harken' is a refreshing take on modern-day fantasies. Most of the main characters have enough development to make you care for them. The lack of any of those characters being vampires or any of the more well-known creatures commonly used in fantasies nowadays makes this story much more compelling. I can easily recommend this to anyone looking for a solid fantasy novel, or simply a quick thrill-ride.I will most certainly read the sequel, 'Harvest,' when it is released. I don't quite remember which chapter it was, but I do remember looking at the clock, realizing it was late, recognizing I had early meetings the next day, but I could not put Harken down. I love that about books.I think Kaleb did a great job with building tension and developing his characters, the good as well as the twisted. The plotting did stretch belief at times. I wish we learned more about the powers of the Guardians and how they came to be or work but I'm curious to read on to see if it will be explained later. While some of Michael's decisions made me shake my head, I felt they were appropriate for the characters age and experience.I'm ready for book 2, Kaleb. Keep writing
