Ghostland (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Ghostland is a dynamic and riveting tale set in post-apocalyptic earth. From the first page I was swept away with the story. The heroine’s strength is subtle, but undeniable. The hero, everything you’d want a hero to be…and then some! Unforeseen twists in the plot kept me guessing until the very last page. Books like Ghostland are hard for me to read. Why? Because Jory Strong’s talent quickly ensnared me in the world she created, because I stayed up until the early morning hours reading under the covers, because I had an uncontrollable urge to flip to the last ten pages so I could see how the story ended; and when it finally did end, I was saddened because it was over. So, if you enjoy losing yourself in an exceptionally well-written story with vivid world-building and outstanding characters, Ghostland will live up to all your expectations. Yet another find in the Sci Fi/Fantasy section of my local library, I randomly pulled this off the shelf intrigued by the title, the synopsis on the back cover, and the lovely artwork on the front. I'm just as swayed by pretty pictures as the next person.Ms. Strong brilliantly creates a post-apocalyptic world where demons, vampires, the gifted, humans, and remnants of modern luxuries (such as running water) co-exist somewhat unwillingly. The main plot is dextrously woven with plenty of intrigue and very little to spoil it ahead of time. However, I am again disappointed to find a wonderful book so despoiled by excessive sex scenes laden with repetitious terminology for various actions, sensations, and body parts. I essentially skipped many of these scenes for the sake of my sanity as I am not a fan of erotica. I think this author would have an easy time moving to mainstream Sci Fi/Fantasy publication if she would only ditch the sexual escapades. Honestly, without reading those parts, this book was of a much higher caliber than other novels I have read in the past few years. It's very rare to find a female Sci Fi/Fantasy author who can handle plots, subplots, alternate universes, and paranormal powers without botching the whole thing. Come to the Light, Jory Strong, we need you. :)All in all, I give this book a 3-Star rating for excessive sex (I know, this is an erotic novel, sorry guys!). I would give it a 5-Star if not for that but it was far too frequent to ignore easily.

Took a chance on this one, now I'll definately be picking up the rest of this series.

You'll enjoy this if you're a fan of Nalini Singh, Sunny, or Carolyn Jewel.
