First You Fall (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I loved this book! It's what I imagine you would get if Josh Lanyon and Ethan Day wrote together - a fun mystery combined with comedy and a little bit of romance. The romance is minimal, though and the book has a weak HFN at best. Kevin Connor is a fantastic hero. He is similar to Mary Calme's Jory, very likeable and always finding trouble. The jury is still out on Kevin's love interest Tony, a cop conflicted about his sexuality. The interaction between Kevin and his friend Freddie, his mom and his clients provide most of the comedy. One of the things I liked most about Kevin is his genuine concern and affection for his clients. I especially liked his sweet relationship with agoraphobic computer geek Marc. I could totally get behind Marc has Kevin's HEA. As for the mystery - I liked it. I thought I had it figured out but there was a twist at the end.I definitely recommend this book. If you are a Kindle Prime member it's free to borrow. I enjoyed it so much that I do feel a little guilty about not paying full price. I did buy the second book right away and plan on buying the 3rd as well so hopefully that makes up for it! This book was totally ridiculous, but also wonderfully hilarious. I enjoyed Kevin's voice and his relationship with Tony more than anything. I saw some readers criticized Kevin's seemingly constant criticism of others based on their personal appearance, but this didn't really bother me. The guy's a twenty-five-year-old hustler! I wasn't expecting someone intellectually stimulating and politically correct. I will say that I appreciated the racial diversity of this book, something that is often sorely lacking in gay novels, particularly in those that take place in large urban cities.
