First Women: The Grace And Power Of America's Modern First Ladies - Plot & Excerpts

Each of the first ladies is supported by a loyal staff made up mostly of women, and many of them generously shared their stories for this book. Among them were Lady Bird Johnson’s social secretary, Bess Abell; Lady Bird’s executive assistant Shirley James; Betty Ford’s press secretary, Sheila Rabb Weidenfeld; and Betty’s personal assistant, Nancy Chirdon Forster. Lissa Muscatine, Melanne Verveer, and Shirley Sagawa worked for Hillary Clinton; Anita McBride was Laura Bush’s chief of staff; and Jackie Norris was Michelle Obama’s first chief of staff. Susan Porter Rose worked for an astounding three first ladies and I was touched by her clear and undying admiration for each of them. And there were the women who stood behind Pat Nixon during the months leading up to her husband’s resignation: Lucy Winchester, Connie Stuart, Joni Stevens, and Gwen King.
My conversations with Rosalynn Carter and Barbara and Laura Bush are what made me to decide to write this book—I wanted to know more about these iconic women and their relationships with one another.
