Fault Lines (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

She knew she should call someone, that she should not try to go through this alone. Her grudging acknowledgment of that fact ran counter to every instinct she had. All she wanted in the world was to go home, get into bed and never come out again.
Her mother was staying overnight. As soon as Rachel pulled herself together she would be heading back to Sarah’s apartment. Home was not an option.
A red light blinked against Sarah’s palm. She walked down Eastern Parkway like a dead woman, narrowly avoiding collision with the people who passed her. She had no sense of where her body ended and where it began. Her skin was cold all over. Mechanically, she held the phone to her ear.
“Hey, Sarah, it’s Joe. I, um…Yeah. I was just thinking about you. Thinking about you a lot, actually. Wondering how you’re doing. Listen, I’m home today. If you want to call, I’ll be…well, I’ll be here. Bye.”
    Sarah clicked the phone shut.
