Everlost (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

The change in writing style from the previous two instalments threw me. I didn't mind that we were getting insight from new characters, but to switch from first person to third was really weird. It didn't take long to get used to though and once I was in the story I was impressed with this one more than the first two. This one, while being a story about mermaids, shows the dark side to relationships. Tatchi experiences what it's like to be in an emotionally abusive relationship and her reactions and feelings felt real. She knew he was bad for her but couldn't seem to leave him. I love that she was able to break the bond herself without needing another man or a death to rectify the situation for her. Tatchi is a much better role model than whingy, whiny, "I'm going to give up my dream of going to the Olympics so I can become a mermaid and run away with my boyfriend" ashlyn. As much as I enjoyed this series I was a bit annoyed/dissapointed with this book, the 3rd in the series. Rather than picking up where the second book leaves off it starts in the second book where Tatchi is left/stays in Natatoria and goes through the events that were happening in Natatoria with Tatchi while the second book was happeing on land with Ash, Fin, and the others. Although I liked finding out what had been going on with Tatchi in Natatoria I don't see why it couldn't have been given to us at the same time. For example, have the Ash & fin POVs and then a chapter in Natatoria so that you knew what was going on in both places in "real" time so you weren't then back tracking. And then the third book could have started where the second left off. Also, allowing for giving us more about what happens with the main characters Ash & Fin that we grew to love and followed so closing in books 1 & 2. It was frustrating that they didn't reappear until near the end of book 3 when they were the main focus of the other 2 books. I was also a bit dissapointed with how quickly everything was wrapped up. By the time we catch up with where the second book left off and we're rejoined with Ash and Fin there wasn't much left in the book. While reading I kep thinking how is the author ever going to have enough time to wrap this all up and sure enough I was left wanting more, thinking "Is that really it?" I wanted more both with how things are "fixed" in Natatoria and how things play out for the main characters (not just Ash & Fin but the others too - I don't want say more than that so I don't give away any spoilers). Don't get me wrong this book is still a decent read and I enjoyed parts of it. I just think there should be more and/or could have been done a little differently. If Brenda were to ever add to this series or have a spin-off series I would definitely read it. I still want to know what else happened...
