Ends And Odds (1994) - Plot & Excerpts

I love Beckett. So this is a biased review. His genius was form. I think he basically told the same story repeatedly -- the meaningless of existence -- but he told that story in different forms and changed theatre. On par with Brecht. I see now from these small plays that radio and film and television helped inspire him to meld the traditional form of theatre with that of the 20th century mediums. Who else used a spool tape recorder as an essential part of the play as in 'Krapp's Last Tape'? Even though that technology is dated, it's still necessary in order to put on that play. You can learn a lot about form, what it can do, how it can break out of its tradition by reading Beckett.Nothing bit high praise. You can read these pieces again and again and see something new. One day I hope to see, and hear (his radio plays) live. (I guess Youtube has helped shut-ins experience Beckett!)
