I really didn’t like this book. I can’t remember having read her before, although the little excerpt in the front of the book was like “whoa!” in a good way. So I picked it up a while back, and finally set to reading it last night. I’ll lay out a few of the reasons.1. I disliked Felicity and the “Nannies.” I couldn’t get past how such a seemingly nice Duke could appreciate someone who is so money-motivated (and there is no backstory that would make me feel otherwise.) Her treatment of the widows was horrendous, and the beginning premise of her mistreatment of them, and the Duke quietly trying to assist, set the tone for the first chapters. As to the Nannies, that was a plot twist that we could have done without. They took away from the relationship that we as romance readers expect to see develop.2. I didn’t like Lord Langley. I never had the sense that he was this master spy that he was made out to be, and he wasn’t a particularly likeable fellow. And he didn’t even have that rough/scarred emotional persona to make him that way. By the end, I could care less that he was being framed – I wanted him gone. And that’s a sad state of affairs for a romance novel! I couldn’t get myself to care about him and his future. I also disliked his relationship with Felicity. It’s only at the end that you get the reunion, and even then it’s glossed over. 3. I felt that the early chemistry between Langley and Minerva had lots of promise, but nothing lived up to that first moment when he decides to make her his wife. There were more, but I think the overarching reason for why I didn’t like the book was relationships: the relationship between the hero and heroine, the relationship between his child and her relationship with the hero and heroine, and role of the secondary characters.

Not particularly good at all. Too much back story I didn't know. Generally silly characters.
