El Lado Oscuro (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Half Bad is an intense story. I often had goosebumps while reading it because it is a thriller (which I didn' know before...) Some scenes were really creepy and I just thought "omg that cannot be happening right now" but I really enjoyed reading it!The book is written in an interesting way and the very first pages completely got me into it and I just couldn't take my hands of it.Nathan is such a great character. He has this both sides: his body, fully Black Witch and his mind which acts like a White whitch's. I really felt with him while reading, his struggles but also his strenght. And there are these White witches but they aren't nice (at least not to Nathan) and they were just this cruel that I nearly freaked out as they tortured Nathan...Hald Bad is an intense and sometimes shocking read but I suggest it to you if you love great stories with some meaning behind them (and creepiness, it's a thriller... ;)) Also it isn't confusing.I like the world the characters live in because it is explained nicely so you don't get confused.I could easily relate to Nathan even though I am a girl. The story is just written in that way that you have to feel the same feels! And also, the battle if Nathan gets marked as a Black or White witch seemed to never end was really strong so I was always hoping with him. It is really interesting to see the world through his eyes. (sometimes the story is telled with "you") He uses this tricks to keep controle of his mind which I really liked.A great debut from Sally Green.PS: There is much violence so if you don't like to read fully explained torture I would suggest not to read it ;) not for the weak This book is truly Half Bad.“Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog”Take a boy and make hims caredscar his back and make him blackkill his mother give him dreadmix this and that with the wing of batmake him run make him lovecook some children on a stovethe money calls for more bloodand that, could never be bad chase the boy, and make a dealo what a thrill to make a meal of nothing at all, and then make sequelthat is the exact equal of nothing at allTo take Harry Potter add more dread and horror and blood till it will only be readable by 17 +, is a clever marketing idea, and could work well because the writer is dynamic in its delivery and has a lot potential but this book is only the first part of a serialise vehicle that can not stand on its own; of a myriad of plot questions only one is resolved everything else is left hanging mid air. You are expected to pay more good money to get the hole story. Steven King serialised The Green Mile and I gladly paid for each booklet because that was the agreement. I loved getting the next instalment and reading it; he had not finish the book, he was writing it as we paid for every part; but when it was finished he sold the entire book as a book. If you are happy to pay for a and inconclusive story and are informed that that is what you are getting, fine. but to end the book in a cliffhanger is not fair to readers. You have been informed.

What do You think about El Lado Oscuro (2014)?

I'm intrigued by this witch-filled world. I'm interested in the boy Nathan and the choices he will make. I am very troubled by large parts of the book -- I don't care how easy healing is, a book that is consistently, deliberately about torture and abuse doesn't really work for me. There are bright spots, but I'm having a hard time with several things. 1: I don't understand why the council of white witches is going with systematic torture. What is it supposed to accomplish? 2: There is nothing about the portrayal of the white witches that indicates that white = good -- which I guess is sort of the point, but meh. That the good guys aren't ever really all good guys, and you have to just people on their individual choices is kind of a simplistic message. So as an adventure goes, it's all right, but also kind a grind. A somewhat horrifying grind about the debasement of a person based on nothing more than his parentage and how he survives it. Timely, I suppose, but more prurient than preventative I suspect. And finally, I know that I shouldn't hold the book responsible for not living up to the ridiculous hyperbole of praise on the back cover, but man, the cover is beautiful, so I like to look at it, and the back cover is full of crap.

This book was 12x better than i thought it would be. I thought witches we've all been there haven't we? But then these were a different breed of witches to what i've become useful. In fact, the whole story was a different breed. There was also something in the writing, the way it was written. I'm not sure what it was but it was good. Parts of this book were wildly barbaric such as the cage and in a way it is a reflection of real life the way that you believe you're doing good by getting rid of the bad people. The Hamlet quote at the beginning summed the whole book up very well.
