Eine Dunkle & Grimmige Geschichte (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Quick, fun read. Gidwitz restores Grimm's fairytales to their more bloody, but still kid-safe original states...more or less. His tales are humorous and blended together into the single story of Hansel & Gretel, and there's blood, but there are also ways to skip the blood, if you're particularly squeamish. But I don't think you'll need or want to. Gidwitz has done a good job of keeping the bloodshed without allowing it to be horror, gore or particularly violent. A Tale Dark & Grimm is a fun read, humorous in a way reminiscent of S. Morgenstern's (The) Princess Bride, and something you can also read aloud to younger readers over a period of days to a week. This is a really dark story, frightning things happen. You may feel upset-I'm talking to big kids now. And as for the little ones,if they are still around,I warn you this book will fright them and make them have nightmares. At least read ot yourself first ,then think they can take it then mabey you can read it to them . And then you have only yourself to blame if they can't sleep for a week. The genre of the book is fantasy because of all of the werid things that happen in the story ;you might not belive its possible then agin its a book where anything can happen.I personally loved the book it is a very descriptive book about the scenes and gives you a good image about whats going on in the book and I felt like I was in the book. ***Spoiler Alert*** Hansel and gretel dad cuts of there head to save a loyal servent but they end up living because thier the main characters in the story. The story takes place in a faraway land where parents cut of their kids heads and turn their kids into crows. In the begining a king and a and a golden princess where if you dare to fall inlove with her you die so the prince had a trust worthy servent and over hears some talking crows that know the future and hepls the two lovers be together so the loyal servent helps them be together but it comes with a price wich is to turn into stone so he did. Then one day the king and queen (the golden princess) have two children hansel and gretel . Here is the part when the fathifull servent starts to talk and told the king that he can bring back him all he has to do is cut off his kids head and wipe there blood across his forehead. So he did so then he turned back too life and put thier kids heads back on like nothing happened, the mother furious but she said they owed thier life to him for what he has done.Thats when the kids adventure comes in trying to find the perfect parents wich supriseingly takes them a while first they moved in with a woman were they tried to get them fat then eat them ,then with a father and mother where the father turned all of his seven boys into crows and they ran away because they were afraid that that would also turn into crows but that also didnt work out because hansel turned into a wolf and was killed by hunters. So gretel ended living with a wido and fell inlove with a man who woul invite girls into his house and ate them and pulled out there souls and locked them up. So your probely thinking what every happened to hansel well you see the hunstman who killed him he killed him as a wolf so he turened back to his normall self and stayed with the king and queen of the land. Let me tell you this the king had a secert and that was to gamble. So one day the devil came along and gambled with the king and the devil won but what the devil wanted was to have him go to hell or else he would burn down the villige and the kingdom so hansel agreed. And his only way out was to reciver three golden hairs from the devil. So he did , Then once agian hansel and gretel were united and decided to go back home but when arriving home another problem ouccers theres a dragon wich the kids have to defeat or the kingdom is destroyed , so couragesly the killed the dragon in there own little way . Making them both heros. Making the story person vs. person. I liked the way the author really described really good on deatails throughout the whole story and i can have a very visiule image in my head making me feel more into the book and making the book come to life in my head and in my imagination.I was satisfied with the fact in the story the author will stop the story and just talk to you about whats going on and explaning it more to you and really describes to you whats going on. Like if it was book club telling your opions after every majior part in the story. I feel like the characters motivation was for the brother and sister to be together in the end and have a loving family who wont cut off thier heads , eat them ,or turn them into crows.I thought the ending of the book was a great way to end it and had a twist to it witch you wouldnt really see coming and i also felt like it should have ended with gretel with someone to marry same for hansel. I give this book a five stars out of five stars because it is one of my favorite books of all time because i dont like books were it stops to tell a love story or someone dies and everybody is sad this book is always keeping your mind going haveing new thouths as you go and its not real meaning anything could happen.I would recommened this book to anyone who loves fantasy and makebleive stories . Also anyone who likes bloody but cool scenes meaning not that bad were your not that grossed out. Remember make sure when you read this book no little kids are around because if they have nightmares you only have yourself to blame.
