Demons Not Included (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

I found this series while looking for something new to read on Goodreads, since I am a big fan of books with the Fae I thought I would give it a try. I don't know why I do this but about halfway through I started reading her the reviews and they were pretty mixed. While I didn't find it as bad as some of the reviews it isn't a five star book either. The main character Nyx is a half human and half Drow which is a Dark Elf, she is part of a group of trackers that keep demons and other paranormal baddies at bay. During the day she looks the same as any other human but at night she becomes Drow with amethyst skin(not purple) and blue hair. Ok the amethyst thing got kinda irritating. There are demons coming through in great numbers and Trackers are being killed along with their human liaisons. Nyx also has a thing for one of the human liaisons Adam. I kinda liked Nyx, she took a beating and kept getting back up, she took many beatings in fact. I liked the fact that she went against her culture and chose not to be subservient to a man. Adam though I didn't really get too invested in him he was just too amenable til the end.Ok my one pet peeve was the perpetual label dropping was worse than even a JR Ward novel and the whole XPhone thing...seriously. On the plus side there was a ton of action and it did hold my interest. 3.5stars – I really wanna rate it higherThis origin story had many wonderful things to recommend it and deserves a higher rating than I am giving it. This fast paced new series introduces us to a variety of paranormals with unusual gifts living alongside humans, working together. More clearly stated, the secondary characters were easily accessible to me as a reader definitely established their own places in this series, while keeping in mind that is for Nyx to say how important they will be. They each seem to have enough layers to make them interesting with their own voices making (it look) easy to plot future storylines. In addition to the great world-building, I really enjoyed the atypical Heroine Nyx, who seems to be eyeing the crown of Kate Daniels. I also enjoyed the writing style which seemed to be going everyplace except straight ahead – but you find you have all the information you need when you need it and with no gaps. There was steamy romance, friendships made and lost, betrayals and a huge action piece to wrap everything up nicely. This series has the potential to go the distance and deserves to be widely read. Things that didn’t work well for me here were the constant name checking in the early chapters and the typos throughout. Both of these items were distracting for me and definitely affected the rating. Bottom line was that I enjoyed the story enough to go back and read more.
