Deer In Headlights (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Alright I'm a little mixed because on the one hand, the book has some awesome themes and the characters are so well done. And come on, a book about Olympus and the gods and goddesses that live there? YES. (There is a but... ahhh!) But it was messy and had some editorial errors and notes throughout. I see now that there is an update to the book, maybe someone released the wrong version to Kindle? For the good stuff: it deserves the four stars I gave it. The development of these ancient gods and goddesses and their stories was very. well. done. The characters the gods chose as pawns in their game? Extremely well done. Believable, even! I love that she became so familiar with the main character Aphrodite, she chose to give her a nickname. That's author love, right there! Staci is great at leading the readers' emotions, I cheered, cried, got angry... ridiculed those silly humans... and only cringed once or twice at the repetitiveness of "ye gods!" throughout the story. I wanted to give it five stars. Someone hand me a snickers... I must be hungry ;) I'm looking forward to book 2 because I can't wait to see how her nonrelationship-relationship with Ares plays out. I'm already addicted. I hope she writes many of these! The Gods have been around for tens of thousands of years and in order to keep themselves from becoming bored, they started challenging each other to duals. These duals are not fighting duals though, nope, they use humans as pawns. In this case, it’s a love dual with Aphrodite (Dita) against Apollo. Dita hasn’t been beaten in more than 3,000 years, she is after all the God of Love, but Apollo is determined to win because the winner receives a token that can be cashed in at any time for anything. He needs a token from Dita so that he can free his lover hat has been trapped for thousands of years. As much as I felt for Apollo and wanted him to be happy, I couldn’t help but root for Dita because the humans that they chose, Dean and Lex were PERFECT for each other. Both “broken” in their own way but put them together and they work. Apollo’s pawn is Dean, AKA Professor Panty Dropper, is a hot musician/song writer that only has a look at a women and supposedly they will fall at his feet. He’s known for his one night stands and can’t seem to stop sleeping with the drummers girlfriends but you can’t really blame him when they keep throwing themselves at him.Dita’s pawn is Lex, artist/writer, who is afraid to invest too much because she doesn’t ever want to fall in love. She’s afraid that if she does, she will be broken should he ever leave her. She and her boyfriend Travis are best friends and what they have together works for both of them. They know that they do not love each other but they like each other’s companionship and they always have a good time together. That is until she first lays eyes on Dean. She’s never felt this way, she can’t keep her eyes off of him when he’s around and since the day that she met him, every picture and every word that she’s written has been about him. Only problem is that he’s the bad boy, they one that will defiantly break her heart because there is no way that she wouldn’t fall in love with him and he’s not one that sticks around.I’ve gotta tell you I’ve long been a fan of books with Gods in them, especially when they are written like they are in this book. They are hilariously funny at times but Aphrodite with her dancing was one of my favorites in this book. The Gods are all kinds of dysfunctional though and there is a story behind every one of them sometimes more than one because as long as they have been around, there’s a million different ways that they screw each other over and it’s not always the good God that wins.I’d like to note that at the back of this book it states that if you want a free ebook of the next book in the series that you only have to write a review on Amazon or Goodreads and then message Staci Hart at her website with the link. I’m going to give it try and will let you know if it worked with my review of book 2 Snake in the Grass which stars Ares and Aphrodite. I’m rooting for Dita because I’m not a fan of Ares at the moment.
