Deadly Storm (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Trying to keep track of the chronological order of the Derrick Storm stories can be difficult (the ones that have been published in real-life anyway), but going back to the beginning of Storm's career in this graphic novel will be highly enjoyable for Castle fans. All of the hints and references of the reality-published novels will finally become clear - and in visual detail! - in this first adventure of Derrick Storm, a private detective recruited by the CIA for his skill and sharp mind. Storm is chasing down a lead over several months, but when he finally finds the missing person, he discovers a plot way bigger than he could have anticipated. With the help of sexy CIA-agent Clara Strike and his surly ex-FBI father, Storm must chase down the bad-guy to assuage both his patriotic duty and his personal sense of justice and pride.Derrick Storm is a typical spy hero of the 21st century - clever, intelligent, ruggedly handsome, strong yet sensitive, and full of well-timed humor in dark situations. His particular story of quiet ingenuity mixed with surveillance experience from his father makes for excellent entertainment, and his witty banter from panel to panel moves the story along at a fast and comical pace. I especially like "Castle's" portrayal of Clara Strike: yes, she's fit and smart and clever and mysterious, but she's also dedicated, strategic, and highly dangerous - all qualities that normally go to the hero and not the Bond-girl. Storm's and Strike's dialogue and interplay from scene to scene are fresh and funny and give the traditional mystery/crime formula an extra kick of sparks and fire. Not the next great American graphic novel perhaps, but a definite must-read for Castle fans and mystery/crime/thriller/spy aficionados. On its own terms, this probably wasn't worth 4 stars. But it can't be taken on its own terms: it has to be taken as an adaptation of a book written by the main character of a TV series I love. And if you put it in that context, it earns the 4 stars. The meta is just fantastic. A forward and about the author written in character by Castle. A reference to Esposito and Ryan in the "making of". Précis of all Richard Castle's other books in the back. And an entertaining little story for a rainy morning to boot.I can't wait for the next one.
