Allan Folsom es un escritor norteamericano que se hizo un nombre en el apartado de los thrillers con su novela The day After Tomorrow, la cual dicen los conocedores que es excelente, yo no la he leído aun. Pero conociendo esa “garra” que tienen algunos escritores no tuve mas remedio que comprar este libro que prometía mucho y que es el segundo de este escritor. Day of Confession (Warner Vision, 1998, 667pp, $8.00USD). Definitivamente es un placer leer en inglés por lo barato que sale, ¿que libro compran en español por $80.00?. Harry Addison lo tenía todo en la vida, era un representante artístico en Hollywood, que manejaba algunas de las más excitantes estrellas de cine y también algunos directores. Pero tenía un hermano al que no veía desde hacía 13 años, un buen día recibe una llamada de Roma indicándole que su hermano Danny había muerto en una explosión y que además era el principal sospechoso de haber asesinado a uno de los mas grandes cardenales de la Iglesia. Lo único que tenía que hacer Harry era recoger los restos de su hermano y regresar al gran mundo en LA. Algo salió mal y de repente Harry Addison es el hombre mas buscado en Italia acusado de haber asesinado a un policía y de ocultar información sobre el asesinato del cardenal. Así comienza esta novela que nos lleva de la mano por las alcantarillas de Roma y el bajo mundo de la mafia. La CIA y el Gruppo Cardinale, que es la agencia investigadora del Vaticano, todos quieren a Harry, pero por una razón distinta, pero ¿por qué el Vaticano trata de matarlo?. Un libro lleno de vueltas y complicado como el que más donde hallamos el plan maestro de una mente retorcida tras un papa chocho que pretende convertir al Vaticano en un imperio que abarque al último bastión sin religión: China. Otro libro mas que ataca a la Iglesia desde adentro. No sé que está pasando que de repente puros libros de estos publican. Como ya no hay comunismo ahora el negro al que tirarle es la Iglesia y con tanto poder y dinero pues algunos trapitos sucios deben de esconder. Definitivamente no es un libro para pensarle mucho, no creo que gane un Nobel pronto este amigo, pero se lee para divertirse no para aburrirse y con este libro no sentí el retraso de 3 horas para abordar el vuelo en México, DF. Siempre ponen al asesino más despiadado capaz de matar presidentes o Papas y que no puede matar a un simple e indefenso abogado. ¿Recuerda que pasó lo mismo en El Informe Pelícano?. Todo sea en nombre de pasarse un buen rato. Las escenas de los asesinatos masivos en China son de un realismo enorme y de una facilidad que sobrecoge, recuerdo en alguna ocasión en México alguien me platicó que quería hacer lo mismo en el DF, la verdad es que es muy fácil. En fin si quiere pasarse 3 días sin dormir este es una buena razón, porque no podrá dejar este libro de lado, se lo digo por experiencia.

Harry Addison in Los Angeles, got a concerning message on his answering machine from his brother whom he hasn’t spoken to in many years, right before finding out that his brother was killed in a bus explosion. Rushing to Italy to bring his brother’s body home, he finds himself being treated as a suspect in the whole plot. Throwing him into a desperate race to save his own life, and get to the bottom of things.I hadn’t read anything by Folsom for a while and quite enjoyed the return to his books. The characters were very well crafted fitting exactly as needed, I felt like you could actually get to know them. I also love how the plot is full of twists and turns, although he tells you who the villains are pretty quick. I wish that he had left out most of the villain stuff, as it would have been a lot more intense not knowing who to look out for. I also found the constant shift from character to character to drag a bit, prefer it when only a couple of characters are focused on, as it I find it to be more nail-biting. The setting was great, who doesn’t want to spend some time in Italy and Rome? I also would like to let the author know that I highly doubt makeup would cover up nail scratches to the face that drew blood. It was a very fast-paced read though, and I would recommend it to thriller fans. Este libro me recordó mucho la novela de Thomas Gifford, Assassini. Sin embargo el ritmo que lleva ésta novela de Allan Folsom es mucho más vertiginoso lo cual hace la lectura mucho más emocionante. En ésta novela Harry Addison, abogado Norte Americano viaja a Italia después de recibir una extraña llamada de su hermano Daniel, sacerdote del Vaticano, y enterarse de que está muerto. Al viajar a Italia para recuperar el cuerpo de su hermano y debido a diversas circunstancias se descubre inmerso en una gran conspiración. Comienza ahí una carrera desesperada por encontrar a su hermano y develar la verdad sobre la desaparición de Daniel y sobre su supuesta participación en el asesinato de un Cardenal. No es un thriller espectacular, pero digamos que es suficientemente bueno para despertar y mantener interés en el lector. Por lo menos en mi caso así fue.

This was my first time reading Allan Folsom so I had no previous exposure to him or reviews by others. When I started to write this review at Amazon, I was very surprised to see that the reviews were almost evenly spaced on each of the five star ratings. I found myself questioning how to write a fair review but here goes.I found the story to be interesting right from the start but then I enjoy stories about the sins of the Catholic church. I found the book to be a page turner. I really did not want to put it down but its length of 556 interesting pages caused me to read it in four sittings. I think there were a couple of minor items that were weak but they did not adversely affect the intrigue of the book.There were a great many characters. I thought that I might have a hard time keeping them straight. However, the author did a good job of i9dentifying where the story was happening and did not jump back and forth between characters needlessly. I am rating this book a 4 star read because of the characters. Even though the story was well written, I did not think the characters were well developed. They were just not characters with which I could identify.I do recommend this book. If you are not liking the book by page 100, you probably try something else.
