Criss Cross (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Kick-ass story and great character development with both the MCs and supporting characters. I love the psychic element of these novels combined with the supernatural law enforcement, it's an interesting combination that works brilliantly. However, that said, I found the plot a little predictable and would have liked a few red-herrings thrown in as I'd figured out who the bad guys were and what they were up to pretty much immediately, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. I'm totally hooked and looking forward to reading the rest of the series. 3.5Overall, I liked the second installment even a bit better than the first one.I'm a newbie to JCP, and I really enjoy her style of writing. It's crisp, fast-paced, the dialogues are fun and I felt I could really connect with the character. The plot was maybe a tiny bit over the top for me, too elaborate, too farfetched - but then again, it's about ghosts, so a bit of "over the top" might be expected. The ghosts *were* pretty creepy indeed and although I could see the direction the story was taking fairly early on, it was kinda fun to watch Victor stumple through the whole mess (yeah, I might be a bit sardistic in that). My biggest problem with the first book was Jacob. I'm not attracted to his physics, but that's just half of it. I didn't really get why he had such a thing for Victor, if it was just a kind of psychic kink or whatever; to me he seemed a bit of a weird stalker. I liked him a lot better in this one. He might have a kink for psycs, but in this story I could feel his attraction and his affection for Victor. He felt more like a whole character here. (If maybe a bit too good to be true, but never mind.)Victor - I cant' really tell *why* I like him so much. He's wimpy at times, sometimes too thick too live, totally insecure and severly traumatized. Still, I just want to give him a hug, tell him to sit down, have a cup of hot chocolate and to f*cking BREATHE. I'm curious how he will develope over time.JCP does ot only an amazing job at world building, her character building in "Criss Cross" is also extremely convincing. Every secondary character is a vivid, living being of his or her own. While many other stories - no matter if mystery or m/m romance or whatnot - fail in introducing believeable, likeable secondary characters, especially secondary *female* characters, JCP delivers just that. There's a lot of potential in Caroline and Lisa (who's not onscreen in this installment, but is driving the story forward by creepy phonecalls) and I like them both. And of course, we've got sexy as sin Crash - i'm really looking forward to seeing more of him in the following books^^
