Cirque Du Freak, Volume 1 (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Finished the text book last night, and our lovely librarian had the Manga version as well. So that was today's task. Manga is an interesting medium, because you have to read right to left, and that means you start from the 'end' of the book and read 'backwards' to the 'front'. It's a tricky thing to get your head round, and as someone who enjoys graphic novels I found myself misreading. But after a few pages it was fine. I actually prefer the manga version of the Cirque du Freak. The story is tighter, and Steve is a more 'evil' character than in the original. What is interesting is that the text apparently is still by himself, so the missing out of bits (Steve stealing from his mum to get the money, the delivery of the antidote by Crepsley, the litmus test when Darren is in the mortuary) is interesting.I wasn't going to bother with the Darren Shan series, but having seen the Manga version, I might continue with those rather than the text! the manga Cirque Du Freak, is a comic adaptation of the book series Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan. true the book it is about Darren and his friend steve find a flyer for Cirque Du Freak a traveling freak show. they see the show and Darren steals one of the freak show's pets, madame octa, a large deadly spider. but when steve gets poisoned by the spider Darren goes to the owner, Larten Crepsley a vampire, he strikes a deal to save steve, and becomes his assistant. the storyline is true to the novel and is a great read, with a mix of thriller,humor and adventure.
