Break Out (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

A 2000 year old vampire and a beautiful mystery woman work together to bust an assassin out of a high security prison. Rico Sanchez, the owner of the pirate ship El Cazador, knows his mystery passenger, Skylar Rossaria, is keeping secrets, but his raging libido is not open to confrontation with her mission, just her curvy body that he wants in his bed and his vampire craving her blood. When the chips are down and the shooting starts will Skylar be with him and his crew? Or is she holding herself back for a reason that she refuses to share with the crew that she seems to fit with? I was happily surprised to find "Vampires in space" but so enjoyed this very well written glance into this genre. Well done Ms. Croft! Break Out was a pretty fun romp through space with a side of danger and suspense, vamp seduction, immortality and immorality issues, genetically modified beings, and secrets galore. Rico is a sexy vampire who has been around for almost 1600 years. During that time he has pretty much seen and done it all (with the exception of being a doctor or dentist- too much blood involved). His current occupation? Space pirate piloting the El Cazador with a crew of interesting characters, each with their own secrets and reasons for being there.Skylar is a soldier in the elite Corps fighting group in the Collective (the current most powerful political group who achieves immortality through a treatment of a drug called Meridian). She is tasked with planning a near- impossible prison break out for the assassin of a prominent political figure. Ever the dutiful soldier she doesn't question the reasons for it- not the smartest plan in my opinion but she has been trained to believe she had all the info she needed, nothing more or less.Enter Rico, his captain Tannis and their crew to help her pull off the job. Too bad they are fed a false story with just enough truth to be plausible. Good thing Rico is suspicious and suspects the truth even if he does keep those suspicions to himself to see how it all plays out. Skylar is the first woman to pique his interest in far too long and he wants to find out what is really going on, preferably by her telling him directly but he is not against more direct methods of persuasion if necessary. As I stated earlier, it was a fun read. There were a few things that made me raise an eyebrow now and then, and the sexy times were limited to innuendo and flirting most of the time. For now Skylar got away way too easily with the crew for the lies told but it remains to be seen how that will work out. The threat of a pissed off vampire may be enough to keep everyone on their best behavior until she proves herself to all of them, particularly Tannis. Break Out is a stand-alone, and Book 2 is about a different set of characters but it is still set on El Cazador which is why I am thinking we will see more of Rico and Skylar.
