8 Class Pets + 1 Squirrel ÷ 1 Dog = CHAOS (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

This is one of our Sunshine State young reader books and I kept shoving it to the bottom of the pile because I thought it looked so dorky but boy was I wrong. The title describes the plot exactly. A squirrel gets chased into a school by a dog and he seeks refuge in every classroom, where there are class pets. Each class pet gets a chance to tell what's going on and it's a disaster. This book was so much fun and it will make a great mentor text for point of view. Hilarious! One of the best intermediate chapter books I have read in a long time! There once was a squirrel who lived outside an elementary school. That squirrel was running away from an owl one evening when he accidentally ran over a sleeping dog's nose. That dog was so angry he started chasing the squirrel, breaking his tether in the process. The poor little squirrel sought sanctuary in the open door of the school. This move will bring excitement to all the class pets who normally live a rather humdrum existence within the confines of their cages. As hunter and hunted move from room to room things get quite out of hand. How will it end? Who will be blamed for the mess? The story is told in short chapters with occasional black and white illustrations. Each chapter is told from the view-point of a different class pet. The author does a wonderful job of showing each creature's personality in their narrative. I laughed out loud most of the way through this book. Now I get to read it again to my 5-year-old son, he will LOVE it!
