Excerpt from The Nunns' Complaint Against the Fryars: Being the Charge Given Into the Court of France by the Nunns of St. Katherine, Near Provins, in France, Against the Fathers Cordeliers, Their Confessours
Certainly never had a Book more need of a Prefa than this. For, to set no less than eighteen women in the front of it, all full of talk and story, needs endanger the frightening away all readers that anv respect to their understanding. So that it look a malicious design against the Stationer, kindly him with a Copy, and put him to the expence of the Pres but to lay such a spell upon it, as no body should da to touch it. I thought it therefore necessary fairly bespeak the Customers, and to draw this curtain befo the terrible scene, till I had stroak'd the readers in* some tolerable Gentleness. It may be, when I haw taken off the fear of this thing with the rattle, the Birr will come in with more freedome.
